Harrison is a strong advocate of science communication. Alongside the underpinning value of published scientific work, he both enjoys and feels more informal written communication is more likely to impact others outside of science. Harrison has numerous scientific papers in formal review, commissioned travel writing and blogs outlining his journey to date.
Scientific Papers

Expanding the provision of ecosystem services
Harrison travelled to Vihiga County with his partner Ennia to explore the role of ecosystem restoration on Biodiversity uplift and food security. Specifically, unpicking the human factors that underpin the willingness of smallholder farmers to plant habitat for pollinators on their land.
This paper has been welcomed by People and Nature for review later this year.

Preventing venomous snakebites
Harrison travelled to the Southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu, in high snakebite risk agricultural areas, to explore approaches to improve the adoption of snakebite prevention measures. Using interdisciplinary methods from Health Literature, he hopes the findings from this paper can help reduce human snakebite fatalities and retaliatory killings.

Travel Writing

An adventure to Guyana, the Wild
In 2023 Tourism Guyana commissioned Harrison to write a double-page spread on his expedition in country during the summer of 2019. Harrison recounts his expedition from formulation to return. He co-pilots a plane into the jungle, meeting a host of incredible people and infamous reptiles along the way.
‘‘Dry humour, strong rum and plenty of casava - Guyana has a portion of my heart, and no doubt, will grab yours too’.

Exploring the wilderness of Guyana, the least visited country in South America
In 2021, Harrison was commissioned by Dure Magazine to write a travel piece in relation to a number of editor questions. This article focuses on my lessons and reflections from spending time in the deep Amazon jungle.
‘There are a few items that wrestle for the top spot (iodine/fishing line/hammock), but a trusty machete is the most important piece of kit for me. It gives you the ability to create fire, enjoy dry clothes, purify water and catch/butcher food - not to mention the ability to walk about 4 meters without a cut.’

Preventing venomous snakebites, the barriers to adoption:
In 2022, Harrison contributed this Blog article to the ConScience Conservation Research Hub at the University of Exeter. It recounts the human experience behind his MSc fieldwork in India, and his journey from a job negotiating post-Brexit trade deals to following his dream of working in reptile conservation research. Failures, adaptations and humour, it is a must-read for anyone attempting their first solo fieldwork!
‘Integrating my species-specific interest within the larger question of human-wildlife coexistence has allowed me to both follow my passion and build on the learnings of different species applications’
